The headlight of Madonetta and the point of the Tiller mark the entry of the narrow part of Bonifacio.
The passage east girds, on both sides, by majestic limestone cliffs which ensure a perfect shelter the ships which come to make slackening by heavy weather there.
The two creeks of Arinella and Catena, located on the left while entering the procession, are regularly used like anchorage, in particular for the sailing ships when the marina posts complete; only two pedestrian ways make it possible to reach it.
The narrow part is divided into three quite distinct zones, the commercial port and the harbour station, the fishing port and the marina. The activity, intense in season, of the ferries which ensure the connection with Sardinia but also of the boats of cruisings, thus concentrates on the level of the commercial port. The fishermen always have some places of wharf but it is the marina, in full rise even if its development is limited by the geography of the places, which occupies the bottom of the narrow part.
The marina knew to exploit as well as possible space while preserving its picturesque and Mediterranean character. It is equipped to accomodate 400 ships (maximum length 55 meters, imperatively to reserve 48 hours in advance), including 220 for the boats of passage. Places at the year are located by a white plate bearing in red the name of the boat. The port offers, directly at the edge of water, all the services essential to the correct operation of any modern port.
The many terraces of the bars, the restaurants and the glaciers accomodate the consumer within a framework enchanter, rocked by the soft murmur the undertow. The navigators will be able to benefit from their stopover to supply itself while carburizing or with food, to make carry out repairs by qualified professionals, to use the automatic laundry, to change money, to rent a vehicle to discover the back-country, to get information near the harbour office or of the maritime businesses…
The pedestrian will be able to stroll or to make purchases in the shops which skirt the Comparetti quays, Banda del Ferro or Sotta-Portigliola. A small train allows a guided tour of the upper town and the boatmen that of the splendid caves bonifacians or Lavezzi islands.
